I was weaned on Johnny Cash! I know the words to every song by heart! I get chills every time I hear my phone ringtone which is “Ring of Fire” and “Folsom Prison Blues.” RIP!

A lot of hillbilly music was dark-themed. Some of it derived from traditional Appalachian murder ballads. Think of songs like Knoxville Girl or Poor Ellen Smith.

Haven’t listened to much of it, huh? It’s full of poverty, homeless wandering, spending time in jail, and *****, especially folk music, old country, and bluegrass.
Basically, the modern equivalent is judging all the genres today by popstars.

That song was kind of dark for the 50’s. I don’t normally think of the 50’s as having songs like this.
